Filers may either Initiate a New Case or File on an Existing Case in our application. This article clears up when to select one or the other.
Initiate a New Case
The option to Initiate a New Case is for starting a brand new case with the courts only. If a case number already exists anywhere in the court’s system, users will want to file on an existing case instead. Additionally, users may not initiate a criminal case. They may only file on an existing criminal case.

File on an Existing Case
If a case number already exists with the court, filers will choose File on an Existing Case from the left menu of the dashboard, even if it is the first time they ever e-Filed on the case in our application. Then they may add the case to their account in Section 1 of that filing.
